If you think about it, biscuits and gravy are the perfect pair. Joined together as compliments to one another. With each bite, we trust that the creamy goodness of the gravy will cover the flaky texture of the biscuit in a blanket of warmth – one never overpowering the other. Southern comfort food at its finest!
In Dallas my favorite spot for biscuits and gravy is Johns Cafe. Their biscuits top my list when I am craving a homemade flaky buttery biscuit smothered in warm creamy gravy or stuffed with eggs, sausage and jam.
For my gluten friendly folks out there, you really can’t go wrong with company cafe. They actually tie two of my brunch loves together placing all of their Benedicts on a GF biscuit.
Actually today is mine and Bs ‘Gotcha day’ as they call it in the adopted pet world – the day we officially met. It was in Austin, TX circa 2006 when I found myself at a bar on Sixth Street called The Dizzy Rooster (I haven’t been back in a while but I think it might still be around). It’s getting late and that’s when it happened. The DJ plays my jam (which is still hotly debated) Kanye’s Jesus Walks with Me or Gold Digger or maybe it was a mash up of the two … and there he was! Getting down across the bar. Now I don’t know why I decided to do this, could have been the hour, but I pointed at him and said directly, “You are mine!” And the rest is history. I guess it was love at first sight because usually I am more inclined to give some random bar guy the middle finger at that hour versus the pointer finger ha!
